UTAG was developed when one individual decided that doing his job was dangerous and that he would be wise to carry certain information with him. We at UTAG developed this personal responsibility theme and have marketed it to the general public but it's interesting that its original concept came out of a work environment.
While we do not all travel around Afghanistan on a motorbike, many of us do face risks in our workplace, often without even thinking about it. The most obvious one that affects many of us, is travelling by road where we can often be alone or travelling outside of normal working hours when our records are not easily accessed.
If an employee has a medical condition, they may not have shared this with their employer (there is no legal obligation to do so) and if it suddenly affects him in the workplace, who would know what had caused the problem?
Pat Symonds, Director of Engineering at Renault Formula 1 was quick to see the importance of filling this gap and saw UTAG as the perfect solution. He told us that an infamous fire in the pit lane at Hockenheim in 1994 when a fuel spill caught fire and engulfed the pit crew made him think about the possible consequences and realised how little he knew about his work colleagues. Fortunately no one was injured but the realisation stuck with Pat and when he saw UTAG, he made sure he had it and offered it to all his workforce.
This lack of knowledge about the workforce is particularly relevant where the place of work contains many sub-contractors.
In fact, if you really think about it there are many situations in your company where UTAG would be very useful. Giving the opportunity to carry a UTAG to your workforce will not only enhance your health and safety culture but also make your employees safer.
